Player Attendance
Did not practice: Physically unable to perform list — OLB Randy Gregory (shoulder) and RT Billy Turner (knee). Did not practice — OL Tom Compton (back), CB K’Waun Williams (knee), WR Tyrie Cleveland (throat), TE Greg Dulcich (hamstring) and DL D.J. Jones (back).
Cleveland was injured Monday and coach Nathaniel Hackett did not provide a return-to-practice timetable. Hackett said the injury happened because of a miscommunication at the line of scrimmage and Cleveland was blocking.
Jones sat out his first practice of camp. “We’re monitoring that situation, but it’s nothing serious,” Hackett said.
New injuries
WR Tim Patrick and RB Damarea Crockett sustained torn ACLs. Crockett was injured during a special teams period and Patrick during 11-on-11 work.
Top play
During a hurry-up drive, QB Brett Rypien completed a long pass to WR Kaden Davis, who had several steps on CB Donnie Lewis.
Thumbs up
WR Brandon Johnson. He blocked a Sam Martin punt attempt, the highlight of an otherwise woeful special teams period. The last time we saw a blocked punt in practice? Never.
QB Brett Rypien. During his hurry-up drill, Rypien completed five of six passes, not including a throwaway.
Thumbs down
Receiver depth. The Broncos are down three receivers — Tim Patrick (ACL), Tyrie Cleveland (throat) and KJ Hamler (knee, limited to individual work). That leaves Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy atop the depth chart and then competition for the other first-team reps and all of the second-team snaps.
Hurry-up offense. The first-team offense went five-and-out and three-and-out in their two hurry-up situations.
Odds and ends
*A sloppy practice for the offense Monday was replaced by a semi-sharper workout Tuesday in terms of pre-snap errors. “Much better (focus),” coach Nathaniel Hackett said. “It was definitely addressed and talked about. I think we got the defense on something, but we didn’t have those self-inflicted wounds (offensively) we had (Monday).”
*The Broncos were in full pads for the first time in training camp, but did not do 1-on-1 individual work (pass rush/protection, running back blitz pick-up or receiver vs. cornerback).
*DL McTelvin Agim took first-team snaps in place of D.J. Jones.
*CB Michael Ojemudia and S Caden Sterns had pass break-ups.
*Wilson’s first series ended with a high-velocity pass to WR Courtland Sutton, who ran a quick slant against CB Ronald Darby. His third series was incompletion (drop by RB Javonte Williams), incompletion (wide of Sutton), incompletion (Sterns pass break-up) and completion to TE Andrew Beck. His fourth series was four consecutive completions.
*OLBs Bradley Chubb and Baron Browning jumped offside on the same play and did push-ups as a punishment.
*WR Montrell Washington beat CB Ja’Quan McMillian down the left sideline and caught QB Brett Rypien’s accurate pass.
*Wilson hurry-up offense (1:25 on the clock): First possession — completions to RB Melvin Gordon and Sutton, throwaway, completion to TE Albert Okwuegbunam and sack (Wilson fell to the ground on purpose). Second possession — completions to WR Jerry Jeudy and Williams and throwaway/sack.
“We didn’t get a score on those and we need to do better and take a look at what they’re doing (defensively) and get some easy completions in those situations at the end of the half and get that first first down,” Hackett said.
*QB Josh Johnson’s only hurry-up possession was a completion to RB Mike Boone, incompletion behind WR Kendall Hinton and passes to TE Eric Saubert and Washington.
*Rypien had the only successful hurry-up possession. He started with completions to RB Tyreik McAllister, WR Brandon Johnson and WR Travis Fulgham. Rypien threw a touchdown to Washington to complete the seven-play drive.
