Broncos training camp rewind, Day 5: Sloppy start, better finish for offense

Player Attendance

Did not practice: Physically unable to perform list — OLB Randy Gregory (shoulder) and  RT Billy Turner (knee). Did not practice — OL Tom Compton (back), CB K’Waun Williams (knee) and TE Greg Dulcich (hamstring).

Williams was injured late in Saturday’s practice. “We’re glad it’s nothing crazy, and we’re hoping (he’s out) not that long at all,” coach Nathaniel Hackett said.

Of Dulcich, who hasn’t practiced in camp yet, Hackett said: “My dad (Paul) would always tell me about (Dallas coach) Tom Landry back in the day and the minute (the hamstring injury) happens, you never rush them back. (Dulcich) is doing a great job studying and working hard. It’s a long way before that first game (at Seattle on Sept. 12).”

New injury

WR Tyrie Cleveland left practice early after getting hit in the throat.

Top play

In red zone work, WR Courtland Sutton gained a step on CB Pat Surtain II and caught QB Russell Wilson’s pass for a touchdown.

Thumbs up

CB Essang Bassey. He was first up as the nickel back in place of an injured K’Waun Williams.

ILB Josey Jewell. Dropping into zone coverage, Jewell left his feet to break up a QB Russell Wilson pass.

Thumbs down

Offensive sloppiness. The offense had three penalties in the first two periods of 11-on-11 work.

Defensive communication. During a red zone snap, there was miscommunication between CBs Pat Surtain II and Essang Bassey and S Kareem Jackson, allowing WR Jerry Jeudy to get wide open for a touchdown catch.

Odds and ends

*Following a day off and the during the first day in shells, the offense started poorly, committing three penalties. QB Russell Wilson called the entire offense together for a must-bounce-back talk, which was fine with coach Nathaniel Hackett.

“I was upset because it hadn’t been going very well and (Wilson) felt that so he brought them up, which was great, trying to get those guys untracked because that’s going to happen in the game,” Hackett said. “It’s about how they respond and a slow start. … You have to continually battle.”

*Wilson’s first pass, deep middle to WR Courtland Sutton, was underthrown, allowing CB Pat Surtain II to break it up. Surtain broke up another long pass intended for Sutton on Wilson’s next series.

*The first-team offensive line remained RT Calvin Anderson, RG Quinn Meinerz, C Lloyd Cushenberry, LG Dalton Risner and LT Garett Bolles. The second unit was LT Quinn Bailey, LG Netane Muti, C Luke Wattenberg, RG Graham Glasgow and right tackle Zack Johnson.

*Wilson 11-on-11 highlights: TE Eric Tomlinson made a one-handed catch in the right flat, Sutton made a catch while being covered by CB Ronald Darby and Jeudy had the edge on Surtain with a quick slant. In the red zone, Wilson completed his first four passes, including touchdowns to Sutton and Jeudy. Wilson’s final pass was wide to Sutton (covered by Surtain).

“A slow start, but (the offense) came back in the red zone and did some good things,” Hackett said.

*Of responding from mistakes, Hackett said: “Hopefully they can take from this day and learn why they weren’t focused as a group. The idea is to learn from that moment so once you’re on the field and the crowd is screaming, it doesn’t happen again or we can bounce back quickly.”

*WR Brandon Johnson received a gift touchdown when he caught QB Josh Johnson’s pass and didn’t appear to have two feet inbounds. Rypien’s only snap was an incompletion that was wiped out by a penalty on CB Bless Austin.

*The Broncos will wear full pads for the first time on Tuesday. “Anytime you get into pads, you’re excited,” Hackett said. “Everything looks different. I’m just excited all that (non-padded work) is over and now we can really work on the football action.”

Tuesday’s schedule

Practice at 10 a.m. (parking lot opens at 8 a.m. and gates at 9 a.m.).
