Player Attendance
Did not practice: Physically unable to perform list — OLB Randy Gregory (shoulder), RT Billy Turner (knee) and OL Tom Compton (back). Did not practice — WR KJ Hamler (knee), WR Tyrie Cleveland (throat), TE Greg Dulcich (hamstring), G Netane Muti (knee), OLB Christopher Allen (foot), S Kareem Jackson (rest), CB Ronald Darby (chest), DL Eyioma Uwazurike (ankle) and DL D.J. Jones (back).
WR Courtland Sutton was in pads but did not participate in team drills a day after landing hard on a long pass from QB Russell Wilson to end Monday’s session. He did ride on a stationary bike on the side.
“He’s got a little shoulder thing we’re just working through,” coach Nathaniel Hackett said.
Darby, who was also banged up while covering Sutton on that play, did not participate Tuesday. “He’s just got like a chest contusion right now,” Hackett said, “so we’re just going to be day-to-day with him.”
CB Pat Surtain II sat out the second half of practice, but Hackett said he’s fine.
Jones came out in pads and worked on a side field for the second straight day. Hamler did not participate a day after taking his first team snaps of training camp.
New injuries
G Ben Braden (back) and RB Tyreik McCallister (hamstring) both went to the locker room in between drills.
Top play
*CB Pat Surtain II and Jerry Jeudy battled in one-on-one drills, with the latter getting the last laugh on the very last play — a perfectly thrown long pass from Wilson that hit Jeudy in the back of the end zone leading to one of the largest roars of the day.
Thumbs up
WR Jerry Jeudy. Given a chance to be the No. 1 receiver with WR Courtland Sutton looking on, Jeudy put in work while lining up all over the field in 11-on-11 drills (we counted four catches). One of our favorites: A nifty reverse pitch to Jeudy in motion that produced chunk yardage.
CB Michael Ojemudia. Going up against Jeudy in 11-on-11 work, Ojemudia showed off his balls skills in locating an overthrown deep ball from Wilson. The 6-foot-1 Iowa product tracked it down for a leaping interception that got the defensive sideline in a lather.
Thumbs down
Ticky-tack flag. CB Damarri Mathis appeared to apply blanket coverage of WR Seth Williams in first-team 11-on-11 drills, but a flag from the back argued otherwise.
K Brandon McManus. The veteran drilled both of his field goals from 40-plus yards at the end of back-to-back two-minute drills to close practice. But prior to that, he made just 3 of 6 attempts, including missing 2 of 3 from distance.
Odds and ends
*The Broncos were in full pads two days ahead of their joint practice with the Cowboys.
*The first team offensive line remained unchanged in 11-on-11 drills: LT Garett Bolles, LG Dalton Risner, C Lloyd Cushenberry, RG Quinn Meinerz and RT Calvin Anderson.
*Asked which offensive lineman has impressed him the most during camp, DL DeShawn Williams quickly replied “Lloyd.”
“I would probably say the MVP of that offensive line so far is Lloyd. His flexibility, he’s stronger, he’s commanding the calls up front. … Whatever the talk that was going on about him losing his spot kind of pushed him to solidify his spot.”
*Coach Nathaniel Hackett on instituting one-on-one passing drills after not doing so early in camp: “That was by popular demand. … It really started with the running backs and inside linebackers. They wanted to get a couple of routes. They wanted to get a little pass protection. We figured since we’re going to do that, let’s get a nice short period and see what happens.”
*The first few sessions of 11-on-11 drills were accompanied by some back-and-forth between the offense and defense. At one point, CB Bless Austin delivered sage advice to TE Rodney Williams, who didn’t appreciate an end-of-play hit near the sideline: “You’re in bounds, stop (complaining).” Later in the practice, Austin read QB Josh Johnson’s eyes perfectly on an out route, leaping into the air to get both hands on the ball … but failed to come down with it.
*The first-and-second team offenses both ran two-minute drills that resulted in field goals to end practice. QB Russell Wilson completed 5 of 9 passes, with the last one going to WR Kendall Hinton to set up a 48-yard kick. After a false start to start his drive, backup QB Josh Johnson completed eight consecutive passes — four to WR Seth Williams — to set up the second field goal from approximately 54 yards.
“We’ve been doing a nice job moving the ball down the field,” Hackett said of the two-minute drills. “We haven’t gotten a ton of touchdowns, but we’ve done what we needed to do to get some points on the board, and that’s the hardest thing, that’s usually the last thing that happens for an offense. So to see the efficiency that’s going on there is really good.”
*The song that blared over the loudspeakers minutes after the Broncos’ new ownership group was officially approved: “Kickstart my heart,” from Mötley Crüe.
Wednesday’s schedule
