Player Attendance
Did not practice: Physically unable to perform list — OLB Randy Gregory (shoulder), RT Billy Turner (knee) and OL Tom Compton (back). Did not practice — WR Tyrie Cleveland (throat), TE Greg Dulcich (hamstring), G Netane Muti (knee) and DL D.J. Jones (back).
CB K’Waun Williams (knee) returned to semi-work (no team snaps) for the first time in a week.
Dulcich and Jones worked on a side field. Dulcich debuted in team work last week and Jones has been out with a back injury and the birth of a baby.
Of Dulcich, coach Nathaniel Hackett said: “(Hamstrings) are very difficult to go through. We’re making sure we’re doing everything the right way.”
Asked if Jones will be worked back into practice this week, Hackett said: “We’re going to play that by ear. He’s been out awhile and we want to slowly work him back in.”
WR KJ Hamler (knee) took his first team snaps of training camp.
New injuries
CB Ronald Darby was shaken up twice in 11-on-11 work, including on the final play of practice. He was able to walk to the locker room.
DL Eyioma Uwazurike had his lower leg looked at by trainers.
Top play
On the final play of practice for the starters, QB Russell Wilson’s downfield pass was slightly underthrown, but WR Courtland Sutton out-jumped CB Ronald Darby and hung onto the football as both players crashed to the turf. Darby was injured on the play.
“That’s football; that’s going to happen,” Hackett said. “You can only control what you can control and that’s why we’re here, but we’re doing what we’re doing from the standpoint of how we practice. At the same time, you have to make each other better and you have to push each other to the limit so it’s about the guys working and competing at all times. I don’t want anybody to hold back.”
Thumbs up
WR Jalen Virgil. Going against CB Michael Ojemudia, he won the advantage downfield to catch a pass from QB Josh Johnson for at least a 50-yard gain.
WR Courtland Sutton. He likely had his best day of training camp, capped by the end-of-practice catch.
Thumbs down
CB Essang Bassey. Covering WR Courtland Sutton, he was called for a downfield pass interference penalty.
CB Ronald Darby. He dropped a sure interception when Sutton slipped on his route.
Odds and ends
*The Broncos practiced in shells after Sunday’s day off. How did they respond in Monday’s practice? “Much better compared to last week (following an off day),” Hackett said. “For me, I don’t think there was enough popping going on so we’ll address that and talk about that. I thought the defense did some really good things and the offense needs to match that. The offense was better from what they were last week, but still not good enough.”
*The Broncos will not have a practice at Mile High before Saturday’s preseason home game against Dallas. Teams generally hold a stadium practice to get a routine of game-day.
*It was a mix-and-match Monday with the defense. DL Mike Purcell and Jonathan Harris and CBs Michael Ojemudia and Damarri Mathis all saw first-team time.
*On QB Russell Wilson’s first four possessions of team work, he would have been sacked twice. He completed his first four passes. His fifth attempt was nearly intercepted by CB Ronald Darby. In Wilson’s red zone possessions, he threw under pressure to RB Melvin Gordon and later threw a touchdown to Gordon.
*DL Matt Henningsen had a batted-down pass on a QB Josh Johnson attempt.
*QB Brett Rypien threw a touchdown pass in the red zone.
*Before meeting with the media, Hackett had a conversation with rookie OLB Nik Bonitto. “Rookies are very unique,” Hackett said. “They’re the top prospect everywhere they’ve been and they come here and still think that’s who they are. But there’s a lot of stuff you have to learn. It’s just a process for those guys.”
