During 11-on-11 work, QB Russell Wilson found WR Courtland Sutton on a deep over route.
Odds and ends
*Tom Compton wasn’t present for the offseason practices that were open to the media and now we know why. Coach Nathaniel Hackett said Compton recently underwent a back “procedure,” and will be placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. “He’s going to be out a little bit,” Hackett said. Compton was signed in the offseason and the Broncos said he would compete for the starting right tackle job against Billy Turner and Calvin Anderson. Compton can also play guard.
*To add depth in the absence of Compton and Turner (knee), the Broncos signed OT Cam Fleming before practice. He started four games for the Broncos last year. “For us, we always want to try and have 15 healthy bodies (on the offensive line) and have three groups,” Hackett said.
*Turner hasn’t practiced since signing with the Broncos. “I think we’re just playing that whole thing by ear and work him in the right way,” Hackett said. “Billy is so great with his body and understands it and communicates. We’ll just get him in at the right time.”
*Rookie TE Greg Dulcich did side-field work due to a hamstring injury sustained last month. “We’re just trying to play that one slowly,” Hackett said.
*The first offensive line group: LT Garett Bolles, LG Dalton Risner, C Lloyd Cushenberry, RG Quinn Meinerz and Anderson at RT. The second group: LT Ben Braden, LG Graham Glasgow, C Luke Wattenberg, RG Netane Muti and RT Zack Johnson.
*During the first period of 11-on-11, RB Javonte Williams took the first carry (and first reception), ILB Jonas Griffith continued to work alongside Josey Jewell and the defensive line was D.J. Jones, Dre’Mont Jones and DeShawn Williams. The second-unit defensive line was Mike Purcell, Jonathan Harris and McTelvin Agim. Also on the No. 2 defense were ILBs Alex Singleton and Justin Strnad, OLBs Baron Browning and Nik Bonitto, CBs Michael Ojemudia and Damarri Mathis.
*The Broncos ran several red-zone periods in practice No. 1. “I love the competitiveness … that’s what you want and that’s what you love,” Hackett said. On one fade pass by Wilson, CB Ronald Darby had tight coverage on WR Courtland Sutton.
*Catching kickoffs from K Brandon McManus were WRs Montrell Washington, Kaden Davis and Trey Quinn.
*Backup QB Josh Johnson’s first pass was off target to WR Jerry Jeudy, who had at least four defenders in his area.
*S Justin Simmons nearly intercepted Wilson on a deflected pass, but couldn’t maintain possession while diving to the turf.
*Before full-squad stretching, McManus and P Sam Martin each had a football and played catch with fans on the grass berm.
*To make room for Fleming on the roster, the Broncos waived LB Kadofi Wright.
*The Broncos have launched a “London Raffle,” and the prize is a five-day trip to England for the Oct. 30 game against Jacksonville. All proceeds will benefit Denver Broncos Charities and tickets are available through Aug. 31 on the Broncos’ website and also in-person during preseason home games against Dallas (Aug. 13) and Minnesota (Aug. 27).
