The Broncos’ stock report after their 42-15 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday:
Stock Up
Kick return game
The Broncos could have a greatly improved kick return game … at least on the road. Montrell Washington had returns of 35 and 20 yards and Jalen Virgil a 30-yard return in the first half. If this keeps up, the Broncos will get good field position on the road and touchbacks at home (since the opponent will choose to boom it through the end zone).
The calendar
There is only one preseason game remaining (next Saturday vs. Minnesota). Thank goodness.
Stock Down
Run game
Again. The backups’ performance in the run game against Dallas last week was criticized twice by coach Nathaniel Hackett. The first half Saturday wasn’t any better. Yes, Mike Boone and Stevie Scott each had eight-yard carries, but the Broncos averaged a lousy 1.9 yards per attempt (not counting Josh Johnson’s kneel-down).
Albert Okwuegbunam
That has to be it, right? Albert O was playing in the fourth quarter of a preseason game when all along, we have tabbed him to be a Week 1 starter. Are the coaches trying to send a message? Eric Saubert also played in the fourth quarter.
Tackling
If you want to cross out the Bills’ first drive in which quarterback Josh Allen played, fine. But what about the rest of the first half? The Bills’ second-teamers dominated the Broncos’ backups. Three drives and three touchdowns. The tackling was pathetic. The coverage was awful. We could go on and on, but we won’t because it’s the preseason.
Overall depth
The Broncos have a personnel meeting every morning and the sessions Sunday and Monday should be interesting. The struggles of the back-of-the-roster players should have general manager George Paton and his staff scouring the league for potential waiver claims after the initial 53-man roster is set.
