Broncos to host Packers for joint practice ahead of preseason game

The Broncos will host a joint practice in Denver again this summer with at least one of their preseason opponents.

The team confirmed Tuesday afternoon that Denver will host Green Bay for a joint practice session ahead of the teams’ Aug. 18 preseason game.

That came after Packers head coach Matt LaFleur earlier in the day told reporters in Green Bay of the arrangement. Though Denver didn’t announce many details, LaFleur said the teams are slated for one practice instead of two.

“I just love getting exposure to new systems, new challenges,” LaFleur said, noting the Packers have multiple joint practices scheduled for the summer. “You can look around the league and there are similar systems that you may or not play, so it’s good to get work against that. It allows you to play your starters a little bit longer in a little bit more controlled setting. …

“We’ll have Baltimore for one practice and we’ll go to Denver for one practice. … We all know how it can go on Day 2. Sometimes it can become a wrestling match out there on Day 2 or an MMA fight. We’ll try to avoid that at all costs.”

The Broncos did say that the joint practice will be open to fans — a notable development because construction on the club’s new training facility and team headquarters is set to begin sometime this summer. The most likely day for a joint practice is probably Friday, Aug. 16, which would give the teams the chance for a heavy work day and then a lighter Saturday before a Sunday game.

This will be the third straight August in which the Broncos have hosted an NFC team for joint practices. Last year the Los Angeles Rams were in town and in 2022 it was the Dallas Cowboys.

The Broncos also host Arizona on Aug. 25 after opening preseason play at Indianapolis on Aug. 11. In an interesting arrangement, Denver plays the Colts on the road in the preseason and then hosts them in Week 14 of the regular season.
