Broncos’ initial 53-man roster set: Here’s a look at Denver’s 2022 team

The Broncos set their initial 53-man roster today. A position by position look:

Offense (24 players)

Quarterbacks (2): Russell Wilson and Brett Rypien.

Rypien won the training camp competition over veteran Josh Johnson, who the Broncos hope to sign to their practice squad.

Running backs (3): Javonte Williams, Melvin Gordon and Mike Boone.

No surprises here. Williams and Gordon are the 1A-1B tandem and Boone adds special teams value.

Tight ends (4): Albert Okwuegbunam, Greg Dulcich, Andrew Beck (FB/TE) and Eric Saubert.

Dulcich (hamstring) will be placed on injured reserve Wednesday and veteran Eric Tomlinson will be re-signed.

Receivers (6): Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler, Montrell Washington, Tyrie Cleveland and Jalen Virgil.

Cleveland (throat) hasn’t practiced since Aug. 1, but won’t be placed on injured reserve Wednesday. Virgil made it as an undrafted free agent.

Offensive linemen (9): LT Garett Bolles, LG Dalton Risner, C Lloyd Cushenberry, RG Quinn Meinerz, RT Billy Turner, RT Calvin Anderson, RT Cam Fleming, G/C Graham Glasgow, G/C Luke Wattenberg.

Fleming made the team after not joining until camp had opened. General manager George Paton said Turner (knee) is expected to be ready for Week 1.

Defense (26 players)

Defensive linemen (5): D.J. Jones, Dre’Mont Jones, DeShawn Williams, Eyioma Uwazurike and Matt Henningsen.

Henningsen’s camp allowed him to beat out McTelvin Agim. Veteran Mike Purcell will be re-signed Wednesday.

Inside linebackers (4): Josey Jewell, Jonas Griffith, Justin Strnad and Alex Singleton.

Keeping only four inside linebackers suggests Griffith (elbow) will be ready for Week 1.

Outside linebackers (6): Bradley Chubb, Randy Gregory, Baron Browning, Nik Bonitto, Jonathon Cooper and Aaron Patrick.

Malik Reed was traded to Pittsburgh, which created a roster spot for Patrick, who is expected to be a core special teams player.

Cornerbacks (6): Pat Surtain II, Ronald Darby, K’Waun Williams, Essang Bassey, Damarri Mathis and Michael Ojemudia.

Ojemudia (elbow) will be placed on injured reserve Wednesday, but is expected to be ready for Week 5.

Safeties (5): Justin Simmons, Kareem Jackson, Caden Sterns, P.J. Locke and Delarrin Turner-Yell.

Keeping a sixth cornerback likely meant not keeping a fifth safety and J.R. Reed was cut.

Specialists (3 players)

K Brandon McManus, P Corliss Waitman and LS Jacob Bobenmoyer.

Waitman beat out Sam Martin to be the punter.
