Brighton shooting involved students from several city high schools

Police are investigating a shooting they said may involve high school students in Brighton, with all suspects in custody.

The shooting happened in the area of South 9th Avenue and Bush Street, police said in a 1:09 p.m. Wednesday tweet. The shooting scene was a couple of blocks north of Brighton High School.

Police found shell casings in the intersection but no victims when they responded, Brighton Police Chief Matt Domenico said in a Wednesday afternoon news conference. A victim took themselves to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The investigation led police to the area of Prairie View High School, where they contacted a vehicle suspected to be involved in the shooting, Domenico said. Two people were arrested in the area of East 120th Avenue and Salem Street, and Prairie View High was placed on lockdown at about 12:30 p.m.

Another person was taken into custody “a little later,” Domenico said, noting police believe they have all suspects in custody.

Other schools in the area were temporarily placed on secure status out of caution, but the secure status was lifted at 2:30 p.m. after Brighton police gave the all-clear for these schools.

Prairie View was given the all-clear, Domenico said at the conference, and police and Prairie View administrators are working on a controlled release of students

“Police are investigating possible student involvement” in the shooting, according to a department tweet, but Domenico could not confirm at the press conference if any of the suspects or the victim were students.

“All staff and students are safe,” the 27J Schools district webpage said. “Operations are resuming as normal.”

The school district, in a late-afternoon news release, said that the incident was “reported to involve a few students from Innovations and Options, Prairie View and Brighton High Schools.”

Earlier, police asked people to avoid both the scene of the shooting and where the arrests were made if possible.
