Two teens plead guilty in March 2023 shooting near Brighton High School

Two teenagers were sentenced to prison after they pleaded guilty to first-degree assault in connection with a shooting near a Brighton high school.

Dakarei Edwards, 18, and Jayden Garcia, 17, pleaded guilty to first-degree assault with serious bodily injury, according to Adams County District Court records. Each was sentenced to four years in juvenile detention and 12 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections.

One person was injured in the shooting.

The two were involved in a March 15, 2023, shooting at 9th Avenue and Bush Street, a couple of block north of Brighton High School.

Officers responded to reports of shots fired and found shell casings at 9th Avenue and Bush Street, a couple blocks north of Brighton High School, police said the day of the shooting. The suspects were pulled over while driving near Prairie View High School and arrested shortly after the shooting.

Multiple schools were on lockdown or took other safety precautions after the shooting.
