Body camera footage of a Loveland police officer who was fired after striking a handcuffed woman in the face was released Friday to the public along with the name of the officer.
The incident happened May 20 as the woman was being evaluated at UCHealth Medical Center of the Rockies, according to the Loveland Police Department. The woman was taken to the hospital after she was found “wandering in and out of traffic and speaking incoherently.”
At the hospital, she was escorted by police to an examination room, where she was verbally abusive to hospital staff and officers. The woman spit at a hospital staffer and at Officer Russell Maranto, who then struck her in the face. The woman was handcuffed at the time. Maranto was placed on administrative leave shortly after the incident and was fired by the department on May 23.
On Friday, Police Chief Tim Doran released body-worn camera footage of the incident and Maranto was identified by the department. Doran apologized to the public for the “inappropriate use of force.”
“I want to apologize to the community for the actions of our former officer not upholding the standards of our policing profession,” Doran said in a video clip.
Maranto is under investigation by the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office for striking the woman. The Larimer County District Attorney’s Office will decide what charges, if any, to file against Maranto, who had been with the department for about one year. The 59-year-old woman, identified by police as Angelia Hall, is charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, in connection to the incident.
