Blizzard warning in effect for San Juan Mountains this week

A blizzard warning is in effect from Tuesday evening until Thursday morning for the eastern San Juan Mountains and Upper Rio Grande Valley as the region readies for up to two feet of snow and heavy winds.

The National Weather Service in Pueblo forecasts 12 to 24 inches for the higher elevations of the eastern San Juans and 6 to 12 inches for lower elevations in the Upper Rio Grande Valley. Winds could gust as high as 80 miles per hour.

“Travel could be very difficult to impossible,” NWS stated in its blizzard warning.

Travelers over Wolf Creek pass could see hazardous driving conditions, as wind chills plunge temperatures as low as 30 below zero.

Meanwhile, much of Colorado’s northern foothills, mountains and plains are under a winter storm watch Tuesday and into Wednesday. That storm is expected to bring periods of heavy and blowing snow.
