Berkeley Donuts closing to make way for Hops & Pie’s new patio

Hops & Pie is putting its potato-doughnut concept on pause.

The northwest Denver pizza joint and beer bar, 3920 Tennyson St., will officially stop service for Berkeley Donuts on Sunday, March 19, owners Leah and Drew Watson announced.

“We will need all our available space in the kitchen – as well as our staff – to go towards accommodating the increased seating from our new larger patio,” the announcement reads

Hops & Pie is currently renovating what had been a makeshift, pandemic-induced patio in their parking lot into a permanent and expansive outdoor area, which they plan to debut next week.

The Watsons started Berkeley Donuts within Hops & Pie in Feb. 2020, serving New England-style potato doughnuts, a cult favorite made with potatoes and flour to make them more fluffy and tender. The doughnuts were so popular that lines would form early in the morning, especially during the pandemic when Hops & Pie could sell them from the doorway to go.

“We don’t take this lightly — it has been a truly wonderful experience serving you all, especially with so many of you becoming regulars and being a familiar face in the mornings’ early hours,” the Watsons said. But they also hope to bring back Berkeley Donuts in some capacity and are considering looking for a coffee shop to host its doughnut operations.
