Capitol Hill pizza spot closing its doors after 24 years

Benny Blanco’s Slice of the Bronx, which has been slinging New York-style pizza out of Capitol Hill, 616 E. 13th Ave., for 24 years, said Tuesday that the location is closing on Aug. 31.

“This decision was not made lightly, and the thought of saying goodbye to the place we’ve called home for so long is truly devastating,” owners Mike and Holly Martinez said in a statement. “Our little corner of Cap Hill has been more than just a pizzeria; it’s been a gathering spot, a late-night refuge, and a place where countless memories were made.”

One of the biggest reasons for the closures is because “we don’t feel comfortable in the area anymore due to homeless and the decline of the neighborhood,” Holly Martinez told The Denver Post via email, adding that her husband was attacked and maced recently.

“Our new location in Arvada is doing extremely well so we’ve decided to focus on that and eventually, hopefully, open up more restaurants up north where we live,” she added.

That location opened in June at 10050 Ralston Road; the address was formerly home to Goombas Pizza Grinder.

“While it’s hard to say goodbye, we are also excited for what lies ahead. Our journey isn’t over; it’s simply evolving. We look forward to continuing to serve you at our new location in Arvada, where we hope to create new memories and continue the legacy that began here in Capitol Hill,” the Martinezes said. “Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for being a part of Benny Blanco’s family. We will miss this chapter dearly, but we are hopeful for the future.”
