Man peacefully surrenders after barricading himself on E Line RTD train in Greenwood Village

A man suspected of being involved in illegal drug activity barricaded himself inside an RTD train Tuesday before peacefully surrendering 40 minutes later, Greenwood Village police said.

The incident started at about 12:10 p.m. when officers responded to the Arapahoe at Village Center Station light rail platform, 6398 E. Caley Ave., on a report of “alleged drug activity,” police said in a news release.

Officers spotted a man who matched a suspect description, the release said. The suspect “appeared to have a large, edged weapon in his jacket and fled from officers onto a northbound RTD train.”

The man “barricaded himself inside the train and was threatening self-harm,” according to police.

After 40 minutes of negotiations, he surrendered “peacefully” to officers and was taken to a local hospital. An investigation is ongoing.

RTD light rail service on the line was shut down and bridged by bus shuttles for about an hour by the incident. The section of the E line has reopened.

No RTD patrons, passengers, or employees were in danger during this incident, police said, and there were no injuries to any parties involved.
