Police are investigating the death of man who was standing in a yard near an intersection in southwest Denver when a car drove into the yard and hit him Monday afternoon.
The crash, reported by the Denver Police Department on X at 4:34 p.m., happened at 3:08 p.m. at the intersection of West Mississippi Avenue and South Irving Street.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene and the man driving the vehicle was taken into custody. At 7:33 p.m., Denver police said on X that the driver was identified as 56-year-old James Corpuz. He was arrested on investigation of vehicular homicide.
“The driver in this situation was westbound on Mississippi Avenue. He was turning right, northbound onto South Irving Street. He actually drove into the yard at 1085 S. Irving and struck a pedestrian,” police spokesman Kurt Barnes said.
The man in the yard was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Barnes said the driver was taken into custody and was being held for investigation of vehicular homicide. He said the driver had signs of being impaired.
Barnes said police don’t know if the man who died lived where he was struck.
The name of the man who was killed has not been released.
