Driver who fled scene of shooting in Aurora and crashed dies at hospital, police say

A driver who fled the scene of a shooting in Aurora earlier this month has died after suffering injuries in a crash, making him the second person to die as a result of the incident.

The unidentified 22-year-old man, who died Tuesday in a hospital, crashed a Kia Forte near the intersection of Peoria Street and Del Mar Parkway on April 5, according to the Aurora Police Department. He will be identified by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.

He’s the second person to die in connection with an exchange of gunfire in front of a grocery store in the 1600 block of South Havana Street, police said.

Tray Von Dion Cathren, 21, allegedly fired a rifle at the Forte, which had three people inside the car. The driver of the Forte and a passenger returned fire hitting Cathren, police said. A female who was inside the Forte fled on foot and the driver and passenger drove off and got into a two-vehicle crash. After the exchange of gunfire, Cathren was dropped off at a hospital where he died the night of the shooting.

The Forte driver’s death is the 15th crash-related fatality in Aurora this year, police said. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
