Police in Aurora are looking for a suspect in a hate crime and are seeking the public’s help in identifying him.
The incident unfolded at about 11 p.m. July 23 at a Rocket Gas Station, 1100 S. Havana St., police said on Twitter.
A man confronted other customers who were speaking Spanish, according to police.
“He told them they don’t belong here and followed them to their car,” police said. “He sprayed the victims with gasoline, looked for a lighter to set them aflame, threw a rock through the back window, and then stole their keys.”
Detectives are investigating the incident as a bias-motivated crime.
The suspect is described as being between the ages of 20 to 25 and about 5 feet, 7 inches tall.
Anyone who recognizes the man in the photograph is asked to call police at 303-627-661 or send an email to StopHate@auroragov.org.
