Aurora pedestrian killed in fatal hit-and-run crash at E. Colfax Avenue and Havana Street

A driver fleeing Aurora police officers hit and killed a pedestrian in the intersection of East Colfax Avenue and Havana Street early Friday morning, closing down the intersection for several hours.

While speeding west down Colfax away from a traffic stop, the driver ran a red light and collided with a pedestrian crossing Colfax, according to a Friday news release from the police department.

This crash marks Aurora’s sixth traffic-related death of 2024, the release stated.

Around 5 a.m. Friday, Aurora police officers performed a traffic stop on a 2008 Hyundai sedan with no license plates near the intersection of East Colfax Avenue and Ironton Street in northeast Aurora, according to the release.

The driver initially yielded, but sped off west down Colfax when the Aurora officer approached the driver’s door, running a red light and fatally striking a pedestrian, the release stated.

The officer was not in pursuit of the car at the time of the crash.

Investigators were on-scene at 5:39 a.m., according to a post on X from the Aurora Police Department.

Witnesses reported a dark sedan with front-end damage pulled over at East Colfax Avenue and Boston Street, which was confirmed to be the car involved in the accident, according to the release.

Officers were able to identify a passenger in the car at the time of the crash but have not been able to locate the driver, the release stated.

The department announced on X that the roadways were reopened as of 9:10 a.m.
