A surge in dogs being owner surrendered has caused the Aurora Animal Shelter to be at full capacity and unable to accept newly surrendered dogs, but there are still two days to take advantage of the 50% off special for dog and cat adoptions to help the shelter.
“Like many other animal shelters in the Front Range, the Aurora Animal Shelter is experiencing an unprecedented high number of owner-surrendered dogs and is currently at full capacity,” the shelter said in a news release. “Starting Aug. 23, the shelter can no longer accept surrendered dogs until further notice.”
There are several ways to help the shelter during this time, including adopting or fostering dogs and donating.
All dogs (and cats) over six months old are 50% off their regular adoption fees through the end of August. Aurora residents who become adopters will receive a free pet license with their adoption.
Fostering is also available, and applications can be found on the shelter’s website.
Those who cannot adopt and would like to support the animals at the shelter can check out the shelter’s Amazon Wish List on their website. The wish list includes items in high demand that will directly impact the animals in the shelter’s care.
The shelter also shared on its website some advice for dog owners who may be struggling while transitioning into post-isolation lifestyles from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The shelter saw record number adoptions during that time, and they hope some of this advice could help before having to make the decision to give up their dog.
“Unfortunately, as people are heading back to work, some pet owners are overwhelmed with caring for their pet while trying to maintain their careers,” the shelter said. “Surrendering a beloved pet is never an easy decision to make. However, there are some alternatives available that could benefit both you and your pet.”
Doggie day care — Several doggie day care facilities throughout the metro area provide a great option for people that work long hours as daycare staff walk, feed and play with dogs.
Hire a dog walker — Instead of rushing home on lunch breaks to walk your dog yourself, hire a dog walker to accommodate your dog’s needs.
Enrichment items — Keep your dog’s mind occupied throughout the day with toys, treat dispensers and puzzles.
Crate training — Crate training has been known to help with house training, reducing anxiety, and prevents unwanted behavior such as chewing on household items.
Seek a professional trainer — If your dog is developing behavior issues, it may be a good idea to seek help from a professional trainer.
Pet food bank — The Aurora Animal Shelter has a food bank struggling pet owners can utilize to help if they are struggling financially. Pet owners can call 303-326-8280 to check availability and schedule an appointment for pick-up.
