Woman arrested for trying to kidnap a child from a Walmart in Alamosa, police say

A 50-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and child abuse after she attempted to kidnap a child from a shopping cart at a store in Alamosa.

Kimberli Jones of Blanca was arrested Thursday on charges of kidnapping, felony menacing, child abuse and disorderly conduct, according to a post on the city of Alamosa’s Facebook page.

According to the post, police were called to the Walmart in Alamosa at 12:49 p.m. on reports of an attempted kidnapping in progress.

When officers arrived, they found a woman who had grabbed a child from a shopping cart in an attempt to kidnap the child. Civilians and store employees restrained the woman until officers arrived and gave the child back to its parents. Jones is in custody at the Alamosa County Detention Center.

The post did not state whether Jones knew the child or its family.

Police believe this is an isolated incident and that there is no danger to the public.
