An off-duty Adams County sheriff’s deputy was killed in a head-on crash in Weld County on Christmas Eve.
Deputy Joshua Maloy, 31, was killed when a driver drifted into oncoming traffic and struck his Toyota Tacoma on County Road 49 south of County Road 40 on Sunday, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Maloy was identified by the Adams County Sheriff’s Office in a news release Tuesday.
“We are grieving as an organization and law enforcement family and are awaiting answers as CSP conducts a full investigation into what occurred,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
The crash occurred about 16 miles south of Greeley at 5:20 p.m. when a 36-year-old woman driving a Toyota Tundra drifted into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with Maloy, said Colorado State Patrol Master Trooper Gary Cutler. Maloy died at the scene.
The woman was taken by helicopter to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, Cutler said. Two passengers in the Tundra, a 2-year-old girl and 1-year-old boy, were also injured, Cutler said. The girl sustained serious injuries and the boy sustained minor injuries.
Everyone involved in the crash was wearing seatbelts or child safety restraints, Cutler said. Excessive speed, drugs or alcohol are not suspected factors in the crash.
Maloy “was a beloved husband, father and deputy” who had worked for the Adams County Sheriff’s Office for two years and nine months, according to the agency.
Before joining the sheriff’s office, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps for more than nine years, according to the sheriff’s office.
