Teen victim identified in fatal Southlands Mall shooting in Aurora

The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office identified the teenager who died after a shooting at Southlands Mall on Saturday night and ruled his death a homicide.

Raphael Velin, 15, died of gunshot wounds after he was shot in the parking lot outside the mall at 6155 S. Main St. in Aurora.

Aurora police responded to the shooting at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, where a large group of teenagers were gathered to celebrate homecoming.

Officers attempted to save Velin’s life and he was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

No suspects are in custody, but Aurora police are searching for suspects seen leaving the scene. A black four-door sedan connected with the shooting was found Sunday morning.

Investigators believe the shooting occurred during a pre-planned meeting, according to Aurora police. The investigation is active and ongoing, department spokesperson Joe Moylan said Tuesday.

Anyone with information related to the shooting can report it anonymously by calling Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
