Middle school student killed while riding bike in Littleton

A child riding their bicycle was killed in a crash Tuesday morning at South Elati Street and West Arapahoe Drive in Littleton, according to police.

Emergency responders answered a call about a crash involving a vehicle and a bicyclist at 8:04 a.m. Tuesday, the Littleton Police Department said in a news release.

Responders immediately performed life-saving measures, but the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

The child was a seventh-grade student at Euclid Middle School, according to Littleton police and Littleton Public Schools.

“Any loss of life is difficult, but the loss of a child is heartbreaking. LPD is grieving with the family and friends of the child and with those impacted in our community,” police officials said in a statement.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene, and the investigation is ongoing, according to Littleton police.

Euclid Middle School Principal Amanda Hurley notified parents of the student’s death in a letter sent Tuesday.

School counselors and district mental health staff are working to connect with and support any students who may have seen the accident or emergency response, Hurley wrote in the letter.

“When something so tragic happens, it affects people throughout our community. I know we will all do our best to care for one another in the days and weeks ahead,” Hurley wrote.
