17-year-old convicted, sentenced to 30 years for 2022 Brighton park homicide

A 17-year-old has been convicted and sentenced to 30 years in prison for the murder of another 17-year-old at a Brighton park in 2022, according to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office in a news release.

Jonah Graham, who was 16 at the time of the shooting, pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree murder in the July 12, 2022 shooting death of Josiah Gonzales, 17, at Ken Mitchel Park in Brighton, according to the news release.

“This was an outrageous, violent crime that took the life of a young, high school-aged victim and it was perpetrated by a fellow teenager — who now must serve a 30-year prison sentence,” 17th Judicial District Attorney Brian Mason said in the news release. “We should all feel a sense of outrage over a crime like this. Gun violence — particularly among young people — is plaguing our community.”

Gonzales was with a friend at the park when Graham and a friend of his approached them about 9:30 p.m. that night.

Witnesses reported hearing an argument between Graham and Gonzales. Graham drew a handgun and fired three shots at Gonzales, according to the news release.

Graham fled but police later apprehended him.

Prosecutors charged Graham as an adult in the case.
