Colorado weather: Blizzard conditions continue on northeast plains; Denver gets several inches of snow

UPDATE: Blizzard conditions on the plains wind down Wednesday

A blizzard that developed overnight across most of the northeast plains is expected to drop another two to seven inches of snow Tuesday.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Boulder expect the snow to continue on the plains during the day and into Tuesday night before eventually diminishing overnight.

The worst conditions are along the Interstate 70 corridor near Limon, where forecasters said winds were reaching the 90th percentile near 60 mph.

The snowfall and strong winds have caused poor visibility on most eastern highways, less than a quarter mile in some areas, and forecasters said there could be impossible driving conditions in some areas.

The plains aren’t the only areas of the state expected to get winter weather today. The Denver metro is under a winter weather advisory until 9 a.m. as an expected one to three inches fall, mainly from downtown Denver south into Douglas County.

The blizzard conditions are likely to spread into the Palmer Divide after sunrise Tuesday, and Castle Rock and eastern Douglas County are in a blizzard warning as well.

Mountain passes are also not exempt from the poor road conditions, as winds could gust above 45 mph and snow showers are possible throughout the day.

The snow will taper off in all areas overnight, and wind speeds will reduce to about 35 to 40 mph on the plains. Blowing snow could still cause poor visibilities even as snowfall stops, forecasters said as they warned drivers in the state to be cautious or avoid trips to the plains altogether.
