Overnight explosion in Sedalia sparks fire, engulfs house

An early morning explosion in Douglas County sparked a fire that quickly engulfed a Sedalia home and RV, sheriff’s officials said.

Douglas County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of an explosion on Platte Avenue in Sedalia around 3:15 a.m. Saturday, the sheriff’s office said in a statement on social media.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they found a house and an RV on fire. One photo posted by the sheriff’s office shows the house entirely engulfed in flames with the roof destroyed.

Deputies immediately began evacuating nearby houses while crews from West Douglas County Fire Protection District and South Metro Fire Rescue began firefighting efforts, the sheriff’s office said.

“A neighbor made the initial call, and a West Douglas volunteer firefighter that lives a block away was first on scene and evacuated a resident living in a second RV at the rear of the property,” said David George-Nichols, assistant chief of West Douglas County Fire Protection District.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still under investigation, the sheriff’s office said.
