A Parker woman died after a small plane crashed in an Arvada neighborhood Friday morning, according to Jefferson County officials.
Melissa Brinkmann died Saturday after a plane carrying her, another adult and two children crashed around 9:30 a.m. Friday on Oberon Road near the Brentwood Street intersection.
She was identified Monday in a statement from her family through the Arvada Police Department.
Brinkmann’s family described her as a daughter, big sister, mom, best friend, partner and hero.
“Melissa was bold, brave, loving, and a fierce champion of those she loved — and she loved boundlessly. To know Melissa was to be inspired by her. She elevated others and made this world a better place,” her family said in a statement Monday.
Brinkmann worked at Accenture and had three children, according to her LinkedIn.
Brinkmann was one of four people taken to hospitals after the crash Friday morning. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed earlier on Monday that at least one of the people injured in the crash died, but did not specify the name or age of the person who died or the total number of fatalities.
The plane departed from Centennial Airport and began losing oil pressure and having engine trouble when the pilot decided to conduct an emergency landing, according to an air traffic recording posted on LiveATC.net.
“During the flight, the pilot communicated with local air traffic control the plane was experiencing engine issues and he planned to land at Rocky Mountain Airport,” said Sarah Sulick, a National Transportation Security Board spokesperson, in a statement emailed to the Denver Post. “For unknown reasons, the pilot did not land at the airport and instead attempted a forced landing onto a road.”
The pilot was halfway between downtown Denver and Standley Lake in Westminster when he began looking for a field or park to land in, according to the recording.
The plane slid down Oberon Road, near the Brentwood Street intersection, and collided with a red truck before landing on the front lawn of an Arvada home. It was on fire when Arvada Fire Protection District crews responded to the incident around 9:40 a.m. Friday. Officials do not yet know if the fire started before or after the crash.
The crash is under investigation by the NTSB.
