One killed after fire engulfs western Colorado apartment complex

One person was killed after a fire engulfed a small apartment complex Friday morning in Palisade, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire crews responded to reports of an explosion at 7:15 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 900 block of Iowa Avenue in Palisade, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The six-unit complex was fully engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived, sheriff’s officials said.

Initial reports indicated one person was trapped inside the building, and the sheriff’s office later confirmed one person died in the fire. The person has not been identified.

The building was destroyed in the fire and six people were displaced. Fire officials do not know what caused the fire, according to the sheriff’s office.
