Colorado Springs police on Friday released body camera footage of a fatal police shooting in which a man pointed a shotgun at officers and refused commands to drop the weapon.
The shooting happened on Feb. 6 in an apartment complex in the 3900 block of East Bijou Street, according to police. At about 1:20 a.m. three 911 calls were made to dispatchers, two reporting shots fired and a third was from a woman reporting that an armed man was knocking on her door and apartment window.
Responding officers contacted the armed man, who threatened to kill them, before disregarding orders to drop the gun, and pointing it at officers, according to a Significant Events Briefing on the incident released Friday by police.
The release includes video from officers’ body-worn cameras, as well as a video clip taken by a citizen witness of the incident. Police warn that the material is graphic and could be disturbing to viewers.
Two officers fired their handguns in the incident and one officer fired a rifle. The suspect died at the scene. A critical incident investigation of the police shooting is ongoing and will be presented, when complete, to the El Paso County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of charges.
