German Marquez solid, Elehuris Montero rakes as Rockies split

On the mound: Right-hander German Marquez continues to pitch well. He shut out the Royals for five innings in a game shortened by rain. Marquez scattered six hits, struck out four and walked one. He has yet to be scored upon this spring.

At the plate: It was a big day for rookie Elehuris Montero, who more and more looks like Colorado’s starting third baseman. Montero was 3-for-3 and blasted his fourth homer of spring. He’s now hitting .318. … First baseman Michael Toglia, who remains on the bubble to make the 26-man roster, continues to flash his power. He hit a 446-foot homer Sunday, his third homer of spring.

On the mound: Right-hander Karl Kauffman got the start and pitched a fine game, tossing four scoreless innings and striking out three. He lowered his ERA to 3.55. … Lefty Ty Blach pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out one. The Regis Jesuit graduate owns a 0.93 ERA this spring.

At the plate: Veteran corner infielder Mike Moustakas, making a strong push for a roster spot, just keeps hitting. He went 1-for-2 Sunday, hitting a double and drawing a walk. He’s hitting .500 (10-for-20) with eight RBIs in seven games.
