Johnstown Buc-ee’s eyes mid-March opening date

The first Colorado Buc-ee’s location is expected to open to the public in a few months.

Josh Smith, operations director with the Texas-based chain of travel centers boasting gas, food and much more, said the team is hoping to open the location off Interstate 25 in Johnstown on March 18.

“We are on schedule and ready to rock and roll,” he told the Reporter-Herald.

The Johnstown location will be the first in Colorado and the farthest west, with other Buc-ee’s in Texas, Tennessee, South Carolina, Missouri, Kentucky, Georgia, Florida and Alabama.

Construction broke ground in the summer of 2022 and has been underway since. The store, once finished, will be one of the biggest in the chain, spanning 74,000 square feet with 120 gas pumps.

With the store months out from its expected opening, people cruising down the interstate can see the building and gas pump overhangs with a large, circular sign off I-25 featuring the cartoon face of the company’s beaver logo smiling atop a towering post.

Smith said that the team has been lucky when it comes to construction, not having any major setbacks and manageable weather.

He said the team is eager to get the first Colorado location open, adding “it is always good to get our footprint in the new market and see how people will take it.”

He added that the store has become a cultural phenomenon — with their location scale, expansive range of items and self-proclaimed cleanest bathrooms in America — down in the southern United States, something that will now be branching out to a new community.

“There is always some built up excitement for that,” he said.

The company is looking to find people for 250 jobs at its new Johnstown store according to previous reporting. To meet this worker need, Buc-ee’s will be holding a mass hiring event at the Embassy Suites, 4705 Clydesdale Parkway, Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is by invitation only and residents can apply online at buc-ees.com/careers.
