An Arapahoe County deputy sheriff was fired Tuesday after he was found guilty of providing a gun to his brother-in-law who was a felon.

Johnny Alvarado, 33, of Lakewood was suspended with pay from the sheriff’s office on May 12 after the agency was notified of a criminal investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ Denver division, according to a news release.

Alvarado was accused of giving his brother-in-law a gun despite knowing he was a felon, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado said in a news release Tuesday.

The loaded gun was found by his brother-in-law’s probation officer in a closet during a routine home visit, and Alvarado told the probation officer he had given it to him, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Alvarado was indicted by a federal grand jury on May 17 on one count of unlawful disposition of a firearm and found guilty on Monday following a jury trial.

Alvarado began working at the sheriff’s office in December 2021 and worked at the Arapahoe County Detention Facility. His sentencing has not been scheduled.
