DU’s Cole Guttman signs two-year deal with Chicago Blackhawks

After a four-year DU hockey career that included 121 points and one national championship, former Pioneers captain Cole Guttman is headed to the Chicago Blackhawks.

The 23-year-old Los Angeles native signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Blackhawks, the NHL franchise announced Thursday.

Guttman closed out his time at DU with his most productive season, finishing in the top three on the team in all three scoring categories with 19 goals, 26 assists and 45 points last winter, and ranking second in the country with 579 faceoff wins. The 92nd team captain in program history, Guttman was also the 101st DU player to pass 100 career points with the Pios. He finished with 55 goals and 66 assists in his career.

The center’s game-winning goal against Minnesota Duluth in last March’s NCAA West Regional final sent the Pios to the Frozen Four in Boston, where they beat Michigan and Minnesota State in successive games to claim the program’s ninth national title.

The Tampa Bay Lightning selected him 180th overall in the 2017 NHL draft, but he became an unrestricted free agent this week after the Lightning did not retain his rights.
