Rockies celebrate the Denver Bears, Modernism Week returns, and more things to do this weekend

Remember the Denver Bears? The Rockies sure do.

Friday. The current state of the Colorado Rockies leaves much to be desired — and it makes us harken back to a simpler time, when the minor league Denver Bears were the only game in town. Maybe the Rockies are feeling the same way, because they are hosting Bears Night at Coors Field on Friday, Aug. 19, when the Rockies take on the San Francisco Giants.

Packages for Bears night range from $25 to $70 and include a ticket and a limited-edition Denver Bears T-shirt. Game-time is 6:40 p.m. at 2001 Blake St. Get info at mlb.com/rockies/tickets/specials/themes/denver-bears. — Jonathan Shikes

Denver Modernism Week’s bounty

Friday-Aug. 28. The return of Denver Modernism Week is a comforting reminder that, yes, some of our favorite events are actually sticking around in this shaky cultural moment. The Friday, Aug. 19-Aug. 28 extravaganza gets press for its 30-mninute walking tours of historic and architecturally significant homes and neighborhoods, but there’s so much more.

Think behind-the-scenes tours, lectures and panels; themed events (1950s prom, anyone?); the Miss Modernism Pageant; modernism market; vintage car and camper shows; and let’s not forget Friday’s opening night party — the Tutti Frutti Tropical Twist — with pop-culture firebrand Charles Phoenix.

Tickets vary in price, ranging from $45 for the walking tours to $25 for the market, and a few events are already sold out. Various locations in the metro area and Boulder through Aug. 28. denvermodernismweek.com — John Wenzel

Sun Valley’s food bounty: Haitian, Vietnamese and more

Saturday. Help bring some light and energy to Sun Valley at the second West Denver Rising Viaduct Night Market, taking place just to the south of Empower Field at Mile High under the Colfax Avenue viaduct. Since the neighborhood is one of the city’s most diverse (with more than 30 languages spoken) and home to local chefs and entrepreneurs from around the world, the market will include a diverse array of artisans, vendors, culture, music and food.

Examples include Raices Brewing, Conbini, Sun Valley Kitchen Chefs, Fritay Haitian Cuisine, Pho King Rapidos, Papusas Food Truck, Luna Rosa Designs, Cempaxochilt Arts, Dia de los Muertos & More, Yamz World of Color and Flor de Jade Shop.

Find the market in Parking Lot B (at the southernmost end) under the viaduct near the Latino Cultural Arts Center at 2705 W. Colfax. It runs from 4 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20. sunvalleyrising.com — Jonathan Shikes

Down in Denver is all local

Saturday-Sunday. Presenting itself as the authentic Denver music experience, the Down in Denver festival returns to the Larimer Lounge this weekend for its second installment of marathon sets, featuring nearly 50 acts on two stages.

Co-creators and scene veterans Kitty Vincent, Marie Litton and Michael Trundle have booked another who’s-who of Colorado indie musicians and experimental comics, from up-and-comer Unicorn Hits to groups spanning the last couple of decades, such as headliners Dressy Bessy and Pink Fuzz, and lovable local comedy/performance-art weirdos like Magic Cyclops and Andrew Novick.

Tickets for the Saturday, Aug. 20-Sunday, Aug. 21 concerts are $25 per day or $30 for both days (take the two-day deal, trust us). 2721 Larimer St. downindenver.com — John Wenzel
