Joe Schobert, Trey Quinn, Stevie Scott released as Broncos cut down to 80 players

The Broncos cut their roster to 80 players Tuesday with five moves, including the release of veteran inside linebacker Joe Schobert, who was signed Aug. 15.

Waived were receiver Trey Quinn and running back Stevie Scott. Guard/center Casey Tucker was waived/injured (toe) and offensive lineman Tom Compton (back) was placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list.

Compton will be out for at least the first four games.

Schobert was added last week after Jonas Griffith’s elbow injury, but the Broncos started Alex Singleton and Justin Strnad against the Bills. Griffith did side field work Tuesday and he hasn’t been ruled out for the Sept. 12 opener at Seattle.

Quinn’s departure leaves the group of Brandon Johnson, Kendall Hinton, Jalen Virgil and Seth Williams to compete for the Nos. 5-6 receiver spot.

Scott became expendable when the Broncos claimed Devine Ozigbo off waivers from New Orleans on Monday.

The next cutdown is from 80 to 53 players on Tuesday.

Turner returns. Right tackle Billy Turner (knee) was present at practice after being away from the team since last Wednesday.

Also not practicing were Griffith, punter Sam Martin (ankle), cornerback Michael Ojemudia (elbow), receiver Tyrie Cleveland (throat), guard Netane Muti (knee) and tight end Greg Dulcich (hamstring).

Gregory, Hamler progress. Outside linebacker Randy Gregory (shoulder) and receiver KJ Hamler (knee) returned to team work Monday.

“I thought they did really good,” coach Nathaniel Hackett said. “Randy, you could definitely see the power off the edge and being able to set the edge. He had a couple of really good pass-rush moves. He’s got fresh legs so he was flying around.

“What is great (for) Hamler) is how many times he’s drawn every single player over and over and over again (on a whiteboard while he rehabilitated). The fact that he can get in there and knows the offense, he might be the best ones (in) understanding the offense because he’s worked so hard.”

Make practice feel like a game and that’s what it’s really been on these (padded practice) days. I feel like we’ve done a good job of that.”
