As the Rockies’ season winds down, the back of their bullpen is cranking it up.
The relief quartet of Justin Lawrence, Dinelson Lamet, Carlos Estevez, and Daniel Bard combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing the Rockies to hold on for a 4-3 win over the Cubs on Sunday afternoon at Wrigley Field.
Connor Joe’s solo home run to lead off the second inning turned out to be an early game-winner.
“That was great,” manager Bud Black told reporters in Chicago. “Connor has shown a lot of patience and he’s been tested in a lot of ways by not getting a lot of playing time. But he continues to work every day.”
Joe told AT&T SportsNet: “It felt awesome. .. It’s really fun to help the team and come back to (the dugout) and see how happy these guys are for me. It’s nice to make an impact on a game and do something positive.”
Colorado took two out of three games from Chicago to capture its first series win on the road since taking three of four games at Arizona July 7-10. The Rockies finished their short road trip in Chicago with a 3-2 record after splitting a two-game series with the White Sox to open the trip.
Starter Ryan Feltner turned in a solid day’s work, pitching 5 1/3 innings and giving up three runs on six hits. He struck out four and walked one.
“Ryan was credible today and he made some strides,” Black said. “Overall, I liked the way we threw the ball and our bullpen was outstanding on this road trip.”
Feltner had two troublesome innings and had particular trouble with veteran catcher Yan Gomes. With two outs in the third, Gomes ripped a two-run single to right, cutting Colorado’s lead to 4-2.
In the sixth, Gomes led off with a long solo homer to left on Feltner’s misplaced, first-pitch sinker, whittling Colorado’s lead to 4-3. After David Bote ripped a double, Feltner’s day was done, but Lawrence closed down the inning.
Lamet pitched a one-two-three seventh and Estevez did the same in the eighth. Bard, nails, as usual, set the Cubs down in order to pocket his 32nd save in 35 chances. Bard has a 1.95 ERA.
In his last 24 games, Estevez has allowed just three earned runs, good for a 1.16 ERA. He’s scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the season and the Rockies face a major decision about the right-hander.
“He’s been really, really solid,” Black said. “We’ve seen that before, in stretches, but maybe not for this long. This has been a really good second half for Carlos, so good for him. Good for us. It’s good to see him pitching like this, using all of his pitches.”
The Rockies took advantage of rookie right-hander Javier Assad’s wildness to score three runs in the first. Assad walked the bases full, setting the stage for a big inning. Brendan Rodgers grounded out to second but drove home Yonathan Daza from third. Randal Grichuk followed with a two-run single to right, scoring C.J. Cron and Charlie Blackmon.
Joe, getting a rare start in left field, blasted his homer off Assad. It was Joe’s seventh home run of the season but just his second since the All-Star break.
The Rockies begin their final homestand of the season when they host the Giants on Monday night at Coors Field.
Rodgers injured. Rodgers left the game prior to the second inning with left hamstring tightness. Rodgers, in the middle of a deep slump, appeared to pull up lame near the first-base bag when he grounded out to second in the first inning.
“We’ll see, but we don’t think it’s significant, and that’s why we got him out of there as early as we did,” Black said. “Like all of these hamstrings, we’ll see how it sets up the next couple of days to see the soreness level.”
Last season, Rodgers suffered a right hamstring strain during spring training on March 13 and did not rejoin the big-league club until May 21.

Kuhl, who’s scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the season, will make his 25th start, his most since a career-high 31 starts for the Pirates in 2017. The right-hander is hoping to build off a solid start against the White Sox last Tuesday at Coors Field when he allowed three runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings. It was his first quality start and his first outing of six or more innings since he pitched a complete-game shutout on June 27 vs. the Dodgers at Coors. Kuhl has made five career starts vs. the Giants, posting an 0-2 record with a 6.12 ERA.
Junis did not pitch well in his last start. Atlanta beat him when he allowed four runs on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts in five innings. The Braves won the game, 5-1. Junis has made two starts against Colorado, getting no decisions and posting a 3.00 ERA. Over 12 innings against the Rockies, he’s struck out 13 and walked just one. He faced the Rockies on Aug. 21 at Coors in San Francisco’s 9-8 win. The right-hander pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up three runs on five hits, including two home runs.
Trending: Randal Grichuk went 2-for-4 Sunday with two RBIs. It was his team-high 38th multi-hit game of the season. Since July 11, the outfielder is hitting .303 (61-for-201) with 10 doubles, three triples, seven home runs and 30 RBIs.
At issue: Utility player Garrett Hampson went 1-for-4 Sunday with a leadoff double in the ninth. But he also struck out in his first three at-bats. He’s hitting .183 (12-for-71) since the All-Star break.
