Fort Collins police shot an armed suspect they said was threatening a woman and two small children in a neighborhood on Wednesday afternoon.
Police responded to a call around 1:20 p.m. about a man who dropped a handgun near West Elizabeth Street and South Shields Street, according to a news release from Fort Collins Police.
The man — who police did not identify — allegedly picked the gun back up and continued walking.
When police arrived, they found the armed man “behaving in a threatening manner” toward a woman pushing two small children in a stroller near the intersection of Springfield Drive and Southridge Drive, the news release said. Police believe the suspect knew the woman and children.
Officers recognized the man as a wanted suspect with a felony warrant, the news release said.
Police told the suspect to drop the gun, according to the release, but the suspect did not comply. One Fort Collins Police officer — who has not yet been identified — fired their weapon, shooting the suspect.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive, police said.
There is no ongoing threat to the community. No officers were injured during the incident, police said.
The 8th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team has been activated and will investigate the shooting.
