Auto theft suspect who pointed gun at Aurora police is shot dead, authorities say

One person, who allegedly pointed a gun at officers, was shot dead by Aurora police in Denver on Saturday afternoon and an investigation is underway.

The police shooting, involving Aurora police, happened in the area of East Alameda Avenue and South Galena Way, Aurora police said in a 4:24 p.m. tweet.

The incident “occurred within the boundaries of Denver, but no Denver Officers were involved,” Aurora police said.

Interim Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas, who officially will assume the role Oct. 15, said at a news conference near the scene that the incident started with the pursuit of a suspected car theft.

About 3:30 p.m. Aurora officers were following a stolen vehicle, with two suspects in it when the vehicle stopped, Thomas said. One suspect stayed with the vehicle, and the other suspect took off running. Aurora officers chased the fleeing suspect on foot to a fenced area. The suspect turned and pointed a gun and was shot by at least two officers.

The suspect was taken to UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital and pronounced dead, Thomas said. The second suspect is in custody. Denver police, the State Patrol and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation are investigating the shooting.

There was a large police presence, both Denver and Aurora officers, in the area, and Alameda was shut down in both directions from Dayton Street to Havana Street, police said.
