Littleton police say that a pipe bomb was found Tuesday near a supermarket, and officials were able to disable it.

Officers, at 12:36 p.m. Tuesday, responded to the area of South Broadway and West Mineral Avenue on a report of a “possible explosive device.” The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad checked the suspicious device, which was found behind a Safeway store, 181 West Mineral Ave., police said in a news release.

A bomb squad member was able to deactivate the explosive and “render the scene safe,” police said.

The Safeway remained open, police said in a 2:03 p.m. tweet, and “the scene is secure and there is no danger to the public as the team investigates.”

At 2:37 p.m. police announced on Twitter: “It was determined that it was an actual pipe bomb. The device has been disabled and there is no longer a threat.”

There was a large police presence in the area because of the incident and South Metro Fire Rescue aided police and deputies.

“This is an active investigation and the LPD investigators are working to find out more information,” the news release said. “Possession, use, or removal of explosives or incendiary devices is a class four felony.”
