Armed robbery suspect dies, Lakewood police agent injured after exchanging gunfire

A Lakewood police agent was injured Monday afternoon after exchanging gunfire with a juvenile girl suspected of robbing a mail carrier. She would die hours later from her injuries.

The mail carrier called police Monday after two juvenile girls allegedly robbed the individual at gunpoint in the 400 block of South Oak Street, Lakewood police spokesperson John Romero said.

Police encountered one of the suspects at a Grease Monkey near South Owens and West Alameda Avenue. The suspect, who has not been identified, then allegedly opened fire at the police agents, Romero said. Multiple agents returned fire, hitting and injuring the suspect, police said.

The juvenile girl was taken to the hospital with undisclosed injuries. Her identity has not been released “because of her age,” according to police.

The agent was also transported to the hospital with injuries that are not expected to be life-threatening, Romero said.

The second juvenile female suspect was taken into custody later Monday in Frederick by ATF agents and Lakewood police, police announced on Twitter.
