403 fire: Evacuation orders lifted as wildfire growth stalls

Authorities on Sunday lifted evacuations around a wildfire burning in Park County as firefighters continued to fight the blaze.

Residents of the Wilson Lakes and Forest Glen subdivisions will be allowed to return home at noon Sunday, according to the Teller County Sheriff’s office. Residents who arrive after 12 p.m. and show proof that they live in the area will be allowed to return.

The neighborhoods will stay on pre-evacuation status as the firefight continues, and authorities warned residents Sunday to expect to see smoke and flames after they return home. Residents should keep a bag packed and stay on alert after returning, authorities said. Other areas that were previously under pre-evacuation orders will remain on that status.

The wildfire, called the 403 fire, remained about 25% contained Sunday, according to the sheriff’s office. The blaze started Thursday and has burned about 1,388 acres, according to the sheriff’s office, which said Sunday that the fire did not grow overnight. Authorities also said no structures had been lost as of Sunday morning.

The fire was human-caused and started on private land near County Road 403, authorities said. Firefighters estimate the wildfire will be fully contained by Tuesday but cautioned that windy weather could reinvigorate the flames.
