A 32-year-old man wanted on charges of attempted first-degree murder was fatally shot by Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies late Thursday night after he fired at them during a traffic stop, sheriff’s officials said.

Kristin Dock died at a hospital after he was shot by Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies on Thursday night, the agency announced Friday morning on X.

The encounter started when a deputy stopped near a vehicle that appeared to be disabled on northbound Kipling Street near Interstate 70 at 11:14 p.m., said spokesperson Jenny Fulton.

When the deputy realized the license plates on the vehicle were expired, he initiated a traffic stop instead of a motorist assist and called for backup, according to the sheriff’s office.

When two deputies arrived at the scene as backup, Dock, who was the driver, and a female passenger had exited the vehicle and were walking around, the agency said in a statement Friday. They both ignored commands to get back into their vehicle.

Dock fired a gun at the deputies, and the deputies returned fire, hitting him multiple times, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies and medical personnel provided first aid and Dock was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No deputies or bystanders were injured, according to the sheriff’s office.

Investigators recovered two handguns at the scene of the shooting that belonged to Dock, Fulton said. Further investigation revealed he had a warrant out for his arrest.

Dock was charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted manslaughter, assault, aggravated robbery and felony menacing in connection with a November 2022 arrest in Aurora, according to court records.

Dock allegedly struck a woman in the face several times with a gun while trying to steal her purse in the 200 block of South Jasper Circle at around 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 23, 2022, according to Aurora police spokesperson Joe Moylan.

He then allegedly fired several rounds at the woman and a friend while they struggled for the purse, fired several shots at passersby as he ran from the scene and tried to carjack a getaway car before he was arrested, Moylan said.

Dock was released on a $200,000 bail in June but failed to appear in Arapahoe County District Court for an arraignment hearing in November. An arrest warrant was issued Nov. 6.

The First Judicial District Attorney’s Office Critical Incident Response Team will investigate the officer-involved shooting.
