RTD A-Line train strikes man in wheelchair; service returns to normal schedule

An A-Line train struck a man using a wheelchair to cross the tracks at an Aurora station Thursday morning, injuring him and causing service disruptions on the commuter rail line for nearly three hours.

The man was hospitalized with serious injuries and is expected to survive, according to Aurora police spokesman Matthew Longshore, who confirmed he was using a wheelchair. The Regional Transportation District said A-Line trains began to resume their normal schedule by early afternoon.

The incident was reported at 9:50 a.m. at the Peoria Station. Longshore said the preliminary investigation determined the person struck by the train was crossing the tracks near the platform while a signal warned of an approaching train.

The Aurora Police Department’s traffic unit is still investigating the incident.

During the police response to the incident, A-Line trains were running every 30 minutes and, at one point, bus shuttles were used to connect the Central Park, Peoria and 40th/Airport Boulevard stations.
